Cape to Cape 2014 - a race report

I know that Bill and Peter Davis participated in the Cape to Cape MTB event again this year and other members of the Ride_Group community have participated over the years.

By all reports the Cape To Cape is an extremely well organised event. It attracts around 1,300 participants including Australia's best mountain bikers from interstate. There is some brilliant video footage of daily highlights accessible from their web site.

Of course, many riders participates for the fun and achievement but there is also some serious racing going on.

My son, Dave, was one of the serious competitors and represented the Dome Coffees Cycling Team. Dave has done the Cape to Cape previously but this is the first time he completed a daily race report.

It is good reading and funny. I've no idea where he got such a good writing style from (it wasn't me!!)..

Click on the following link for Dave's report.

Bill / Peter do you have a report on the event that you would like to share?

The "Mediocrity Ride" is scheduled again but don't confuse the fact we're doing this ride fairly often with it being popular!

Alan Perkins first introduced the "Mediocrity Ride" in April 2012. It was, well "ok" (according to half the group). Some said the ride was really good ...but that was thanks only to the weather. Others have said that the weather and the people made it ok. No one has attributed anything overly special to the actual route. Some said the ride was perhaps, "possibly repeatable". So we've decided to repeat it.

The "Mediocrity Ride" features ideas carefully pilfered from other people, and offers something to most. It is the ride rated "OK" by 5 out of 10 people! If you're excited about this ride ...DON'T BE ...you've missed the point!

Starting at Narrows - Southside, the "Mediocrity Ride" is a leisurely 50 km tour. The terrain is mainly flat with some gentle hills (ie "Ken friendly"); uses a mixture of cycle paths and roads, and intersperses faster stretches with slower, more technical sections.

Alan tells me that this time around he is thinking of re-routing the "Mediocrity Ride" to run it in the reverse direction. It will have a different coffee stop and everything: but don't worry - it'll still be really average!

Alan anticipates an 8:30 am start from the Narrows (South side), with the "over achievers" having the option of a 8:00 departure from Maylands.

RideNstyle Closing Down Sale

Maurizio Petrocchi is well known in Perth Cycling circles and the huge number of cycling trophies he has in his collection is a sight to see.

Many will remember the shop he had for years in Cottesloe on Stirling Highway. For the last couple of years Maurizio has operated his shop at 409 Oxford Street, Mt Hawthorn.

There isn't anywhere else in Perth that specialises in Cycling clothing. There is a huge range of high quality products and some brands that you just can't get hold of elsewhere.

Maurizio is planning to close the business and retire .. so it is well worth having a look at his shop and treating yourself. Don't expect bargain basement pricing.. but there is plenty of high quality stuff at better than usual prices.

[Note - this is not a paid advert, and I've nothing to gain by placing this posting]

Ride Etiquette discussion

It has been some time since we've had discussion on Ride Etiquette and an article in today's Cycling News prompted me to look through the Ride Etiquette for South Perth Rouleurs (which the article referred to as a great example).

I've heard many good things about South Perth Rouleurs in recent weeks from people who ride with them and in relation to a recent vehicle / cyclist accident. The SPR Etiquette covers many aspects and sets an admirable standard that I think we should aspire to.

Please take the opportunity to read through the SPR Ride Etiquette:-
http://www.southperthrouleurs.com.au/club-training/ride-etiquette/

The following items in particular resonated with me:-

Ethos:            Remember… our actions as individual riders reflect upon (the group) as a whole

The Basics:  Be on time; and Maintain your bike in good order
(the time to check your bike is before the scheduled ride start time)
